Ageing well is important to ensure both your physical and emotional health are maintained as well as continuing to feel inclusive in society. The 5 tips below can help you live healthier and happier for longer:
- Maintaining a healthy diet – ensuring you maintain a healthy balanced diet low in saturated fats with lots of fruits and vegetables, wholegrains and oily fish is crucial for good health, increasing energy and preventing illness. Avoid dehydration by drinking lots of water and ensure you do not exceed your daily unit limit of alcohol.
- Dental health – brushing and flossing twice daily can help prevent gum disease which can be linked to diabetes, strokes, heart disease and arthritis.
- Staying active – Taking time each day to undertake some physical activity, even if it is just a walk helps you stay strong and healthy. The Government recommends that older adults do 150 minutes of mid intensity activity per week.
- Use services available to you – make sure you attend routine screenings and attend Health Checks as well as getting the annual flu jab which is free once you reach 65. Attending regular dental, eye and hearing tests are also important to attend yearly.
Keep in touch – make sure to spend time with other people, be that family, friends or local community groups. Use new technology such as Skype to keep in touch with people who are not nearby or even join online dating sites!
